Abstract: In the study of ethics, moral imagination is a challenging term.For many scholars, the reasonableness of moral imagination is a paradox: we cannot imagine morality with poor imagination,and we cannot let imagination plays a leading in the ethics.By distinguishing two kinds of moral sympathy, Kant admitted the emotional bonding ability and cognitive ability of the moral imagination,yet denied the moral values of compassion. The cognitive imagination has a close connection with the moral rationality, and the empathic imagination has a connection with the moral emotion. These two have so different mechanism in having an influence on morality that if they were regarded as the same thing, it will be a antinomy. In fact , these inherent antinomies is relevant to the lofty and basic Characteristic of morality .We cannot resolve these antinomies,but we can determine the range of the moral imagination by exploring the tensions formed by these antinomies.
